Hang finishes top five, Uemura top 20 on Day 3 of Junior Worlds
All-Around Final Results: Men | Women
Jayla Hang (Bellevue, Wash./Pacific Reign Gymnastics) rallied to finish just off the podium after entering finals at 24th on Day 3 of the Junior Artistic World Championships in Antalya. Due to injury, David Shamah (Rock Hill, N.Y./ EVO Gymnastics) and Izzy Stassi (North Royalton, Ohio/Buckeye Gymnastics) each withdrew from all-around competition. Stassi remains questionable for the weekend's event finals.
In women's competition, Hang's 50.832 landed her just off the podium behind Italy's Caterina Gaddi who took bronze with a 50.899, and Japanese athletes Haruka Nakamura and Sara Yamaguchi who earned gold and silver, respectively with scores of 51.765 and 51.532. Hang improved on three of her four qualifying scores and recorded the highest vault total of the day with a 13.966.
Kai Uemura (Chicago, Ill./Lakeshore Academy of Art Gymnastics) finished top 20 in the men's field, posting a combined 74.831 for 19th. China's Guohuan Qin claimed all-around gold with an 80.199 to edge out silver medalist Angel Barajas of Colombia who scored an 80.131 and Italy's Riccardo Villa who rounded out the top three with a 79.665.
Uemura, Hang and Hezly Rivera (Oradell, N.J./WOGA Gymnastics) will be in action Saturday for apparatus finals beginning at 7 a.m. ET. Hang will compete on vault at 7:35 a.m. ET, Rivera on uneven bars at 9 a.m. ET and Uemura on still rings at 9 :35 a.m. ET.
